Hey Grill-Master, you may feel the heat while grilling, but what about your guests? Are they enjoying the comfort and warmth that fire provides while on your outdoor living patio? Have you considered adding a fire pit to the mix? Fire pits bring style and function together and have become a must-have accessory for outdoor living. Here are the basic things you need to know about adding a fire pit to your patio or outdoor living space.

What Is A Fire Pit?

Fire pits are outdoor enclosures with an outer shell and a fire pit insert. The fire enclosure can be built of a variety of materials — tile, ledgerstone, and garden paver stones being three of the most popular options.

Should You Choose A Wood Or Gas Fire Pit?

Just as you do with fireplaces and grills, you have fuel options: do you want a wood or gas fire pit? Here in Central Colorado, gas is a more practical option, as the use of wood fire pits is often restricted by local authorities during the summer months. That means, no s’mores, no ghost stories around the fire, and nothing to take the chill off on a cool, summer night. You want a fire pit you can use year ‘round, which is why, for homeowners  in Littleton, Evergreen, and the surrounding communities, gas is a much better option. Plus, wood fire pits are more work, and if the ashes get wet — what a nightmare!

Modern gas fire pits have convenient features, like flame control and easy ignition, which make it easier than ever to enjoy a fire right on your patio or deck.

Natural Or Propane?

Fire pits come either fully assembled or close to it, and typically have a space beneath for a 20 lb. propane cylinder. However, this doesn’t mean you have to stick with propane — we can easily convert your fire pit to natural gas. Converting to natural gas will save you space, as you won’t have to account for the propane tank itself.

As far as ignition goes, you can choose to light the fire manually, with a battery system, or have it hooked into your home’s electrical service. Just be sure to use a flame detection system so that gas flow shuts of if the fire goes out.

What About Style? Can You Customize Your Fire Pit?

Some fire pits feature logs and volcanic cinders, but the most on-trend and popular fire pits today have glass or stones as the burner media.

You can also customize your fire pit by choosing a semi-custom option. The manufacturer will supply a separate burner and body, and the finishing material of your choice (for example: tile or ledgerstone) can be applied for a custom-look that fits with the aesthetic of your outdoor living patio.
